Case Study Bundle | 8th – 12th | Biology, Environment
Description
Case studies show what summaries can’t: how a strategy performs in a real place, with real constraints. This bundle collects three real-world coral reef restoration case studies, each built around a different theory of how reefs recover — cool the water during heatwaves, grow coral in nurseries and transplant it, or protect an area and let the reef rebound on its own.
Across the three, students analyze the evidence for each strategy and then evaluate them against each other — active intervention vs. patient protection, engineering vs. ecology.
What’s inside
- Artificial Cooling Systems — a case study of cooling technology designed to protect reefs from bleaching during marine heatwaves.
- Coral Nurseries — a case study of nurseries where coral fragments are grown and transplanted to restore degraded reefs.
- Marine Protected Areas — a case study of how limiting human impacts inside protected areas helps reefs recover.
The two paid case studies total $7.50 separately; the bundle is $6.50.
How it runs in class
Run the three case studies as a comparative set: students analyze the evidence in each, then step back and evaluate the strategies as a portfolio. The bundle works as the applied second half of a coral bleaching sequence — after students understand the phenomenon, the case studies ask what anyone is actually doing about it, and how well it’s working. It also runs well as a jigsaw, with groups owning one strategy and defending it to the class.
