FREE Climate Change Engage Activity: Polar Bear Observation (NGSS HS Biology)

$0.00

Engage Activity | 6th – 12th | Biology, Environment, Marine Science

Description

The best Arctic lesson opener isn’t a lecture — it’s a polar bear, live. This free engage activity has students watch a short video or live cam from Polar Bears International and respond to structured observation questions covering animal behavior, adaptations, ecosystems, climate change, and Arctic biodiversity.

It’s no-prep, it’s free, and it’s the intended front door to the whole Beyond the Brains Arctic line: observation first, because that’s where real science starts.

What’s inside

  • A no-prep ENGAGE activity built around a short video or live cam from Polar Bears International.
  • Structured observation questions spanning animal behavior, adaptations, ecosystems, climate change, and Arctic biodiversity.

How it runs in class

Project the cam, hand out the questions, and let students do the noticing. The structured prompts keep observation disciplined — behavior and adaptation, not just “the bear is cute” — and the responses give you a formative read on what students already understand about Arctic ecosystems before you build on it. Run it as the first ten minutes of an Arctic sequence, as a full engage lesson, or as a reliable sub-day task with genuine content. When students then meet the sea ice and population data, they’ve already watched the animal whose habitat is in those graphs.

Where it leads

Observation is step one of the Beyond the Brains approach on every topic: phenomenon, then evidence, then argument. This activity is designed to hand off directly to the data work — the same bears, now in numbers.

Standards alignment

NGSS: HS-LS2-6, HS-LS2-8. Grades 6–12 · Biology, Environment, Marine Science.

It also does quiet diagnostic work. What students choose to record — behavior, ice, other animals, the weather on the cam — reveals their starting model of an Arctic ecosystem before you’ve taught a word. Revisit those first observations at the end of your Arctic sequence and students can see their own learning: what they notice in week three that they couldn’t see in week one.

Follow it with the Polar Bears & Arctic Sea Ice data analysis activity — the store’s flagship — or build the whole arc with the Arctic Sea Ice & Polar Bears 5E Unit. Find more free resources in the Free Library.
