El Niño Activities Bundle: Reading Comprehension, Data Analysis & CER Task Cards

Description

El Niño is one of the best real-world case studies in all of Earth science — a shift in Pacific Ocean temperatures that rearranges weather patterns on the other side of the planet. It is also a topic students usually meet as vocabulary to memorize. This bundle approaches it the other way: students first build the background knowledge, then work with real-world El Niño data, then defend conclusions from that data in writing.

The El Niño Activities Bundle pairs the two pieces of the line into one download, so the sequence runs cleanly from reading, to data, to argument — without you stitching together separate resources mid-unit.

What’s inside

• El Niño Reading Comprehension Handout — an engaging science reading on what El Niño is, how it develops, and why changes in the Pacific Ocean affect weather and ecosystems thousands of miles away, with comprehension questions.
• El Niño Data Analysis & CER Task Cards — a 10-card set in which students analyze background information, interpret data tables from El Niño events around the world, draw conclusions, and support their ideas with specific evidence.

Purchased separately, the two resources total $9.24; the bundle is $6.75.

How it runs in class

Start with the reading handout to build shared background knowledge, then move to the task cards for station rotation or independent practice. Students finish by writing Claim-Evidence-Reasoning responses grounded in the data they just analyzed — the reading gives them the concepts, the cards make them use them.
