S.E.E.D. Bundle | 8th – 12th | Biology, Earth Sciences, Environment

Description

Plastic pollution is not one problem, and it does not have one solution. This bundle treats it the way scientists and engineers actually approach it — as a set of intervention points, each with evidence for and against it. Students evaluate three real-world strategies that attack the problem at three different points: before plastic reaches the water, while it travels downriver, and after it reaches the ocean.

Each activity runs on the S.E.E.D. Framework, so by the third one, students aren’t just learning content — they’re getting measurably better at evaluating solutions.

What’s inside

  • River Plastic Interceptors — students evaluate systems that capture floating plastic waste in rivers before it reaches the ocean.
  • Deposit Return Systems — students evaluate a prevention strategy that increases beverage container collection and keeps plastic out of ecosystems in the first place.
  • Ocean Cleanup Systems — students evaluate large-scale efforts to remove plastic that has already reached the ocean.

The three activities total $12.75 purchased separately; the bundle is $10.25.

How it runs in class

Run the activities in order and the bundle becomes a built-in comparison: prevention vs. interception vs. cleanup. Students analyze scientific evidence for each strategy, evaluate costs and tradeoffs, and write an evidence-based recommendation for each. The sequence works as a multi-day plastic pollution arc inside a larger climate or ecology unit, and it ends naturally in a class discussion — which strategy deserves the investment, and what does the evidence actually say?

Built on the S.E.E.D. Framework

Every activity follows the full framework: State the Problem, Examine the Evidence, Evaluate Feasibility, Determine a Recommendation. Learn more about how the S.E.E.D. Framework works.

Standards alignment

NGSS: HS-LS2-7, HS-ESS3-4, HS-LS2-6. Grades 8–12 · Biology, Earth Sciences, Environment.

Used as a set, the bundle also builds a habit of mind worth naming for students: real environmental problems are managed as portfolios, not solved by single technologies. Prevention, interception, and cleanup each cover the others’ blind spots, and the strongest final discussions in this bundle are the ones where students stop asking which single strategy wins and start arguing about the mix.

Want just one strategy? Start with the River Plastic Interceptors activity on its own. New to Beyond the Brains? The Free Library is the place to start.
