El Niño Data Analysis & Science CER Practice Task Card Activity
$6.25
Task Cards | 6th – 12th | Biology, Earth Sciences, Environment
Description
Most students can define El Niño. Far fewer can look at data from an El Niño event and tell you what it actually did. This task card set closes that gap: students practice Claim-Evidence-Reasoning using real-world El Niño data from locations around the world, so the argumentation skill is learned on content that matters.
Each card asks students to do the full scientific move — take in the background information, interpret the data, and commit to a conclusion they can defend.
What’s inside
- A 10-card task set built around real-world El Niño data from locations around the world.
- Background information on each card so students can work independently.
- Data tables for students to interpret and draw conclusions from.
- CER prompts that require students to support every conclusion with specific evidence from the data.
How it runs in class
The set is built for station rotation and independent practice. Run the cards as rotating stations for a full data-analysis period, assign a subset as independent practice, or use individual cards as a warm-up before a CER writing task. Pair it with a CER organizer and students who struggle to start writing have a structure to lean on.
Standards alignment
NGSS: MS-ESS2-5, MS-ESS2-6, HS-ESS2-2, HS-ESS2-4, HS-ESS3-5. Grades 6–12 · Biology, Earth Sciences, Environment.
Close with a debrief that makes the set more than ten separate cards: have students compare conclusions across the locations on their cards. Different regions feel El Niño differently — wetter here, drier there, fisheries disrupted somewhere else — and seeing that variation side by side is what turns a weather event into a systems lesson. The CER responses double as formative assessment: a student whose evidence doesn’t match their claim has shown you exactly what to revisit.
Running a full El Niño sequence? This set is also in the El Niño Activities Bundle with the reading handout — $6.75 for both instead of $9.24 separately. New to Beyond the Brains? Start with the Free Library.
