The S.E.E.D. Framework™

Think like an environmental scientist.

Scientific Environmental Evaluation & Decision-Making — our signature method for turning opinions into evidence-based recommendations.

— the method behind every resource we make

What it is

Beyond identifying problems — evaluating solutions.

Most environmental science activities stop at identifying problems. The S.E.E.D. Framework guides students to evaluate solutions the way scientists do: weigh the evidence, consider feasibility and tradeoffs, and defend a recommendation with data — not gut feeling.

Students don’t just learn what’s wrong with the world. They practice the exact thinking the world needs: how to look at competing solutions, score them honestly, and argue for the best one with evidence.

What changes

×Old: “Plastic pollution is bad.” Full stop.
✓S.E.E.D.: “Of these three interventions, which reduces the most plastic per dollar — and why?”
×Old: Opinions without evidence.
✓S.E.E.D.: Claim–Evidence–Reasoning, defended with data.

The four phases

How S.E.E.D. works

Four phases, one clear thinking path — from naming the problem to defending a recommendation.

S

State the Problem

Name the environmental problem the solution is meant to address. Clear problem, clear target — no solving the wrong thing.

E

Examine the Evidence

Analyze the scientific briefing: data, costs, limitations, tradeoffs. Students read real evidence before forming any opinion.

E

Evaluate Feasibility

Score the solution honestly — not on how it sounds, but on whether it could actually work.

D

Determine Your Recommendation

Build a final recommendation in Claim–Evidence–Reasoning format — and defend it like a scientist.

In the classroom

One class period. That’s it.

A complete S.E.E.D. cycle fits inside a single period — no multi-day overhaul required.

15–20 min

1.

Scientific briefing

Students read and annotate real data — the evidence base for everything that follows.

2.

S.E.E.D. Framework

Students work through the four phases: state, examine, evaluate, determine.

10–15 min

3.

Scorecard + CER

Rate the solution, calculate the score, write the recommendation — and defend it.

Why educators use it

Built for real classrooms

Transferable across topics, differentiated by design, and ready to use the day it arrives.

Transferable across topics

One framework, endless issues. Once students learn S.E.E.D., they can apply it to any environmental challenge.

Built-in differentiation

Support and challenge paths are designed in from the start — every learner can access the thinking, and every learner can be stretched by it.
